It houses personnel, serves as a training ground, stores equipment, and supports military operations. In addition, the Camp Fretterd Military Reservation provides support to members of the Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marines and Navy, by providing them with housing and amenities.
Also headquartered at the Camo Fretterd Military Reservation is the Maryland Defense Force (MDDF). The MDDF was established in 1917 as the Maryland State Guard. It had a mission to protect public buildings, water supplies and other properties of Maryland. In 1920, it was disbanded so the National Guard can take over. It was reactivated during World War II and deactivated again until 1983, when it was renamed the Marland Defense Forces. Now, the task of MDDF is to provide support to the Maryland Military Department. This volunteer military organization is on the same level as the Maryland National Guard. It is under the control of the state of Maryland and cannot be deployed outside of its borders.
