Its geographical bounds stretch from Lombard Street in the north, to Kane Street in the east, Eastern Avenue in the south, and I-895 in the west, encompassing the Joseph Lee neighborhood as well. Historically, Bayview was known as "A to K," a nod to the alphabetical naming of its streets, from Anglesea to Kane.
At the heart of Bayview is the 130-acre Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, a cornerstone of healthcare and research. This medical hub is not only a testament to Bayview's commitment to health and wellness but also home to two branches of the National Institutes of Health: the National Institute on Aging and the National Institute on Drug Abuse.
Bayview's rich diversity is reflected in its demographic makeup. According to the 2000 census, the neighborhood was home to 460 residents, showcasing a multicultural tapestry of 55.4% White, 29.3% African American, 10.9% Asian, and a blend of other ethnicities. This diversity is not just in race but also in lifestyles, with a mix of housing units, and a population actively engaged in various forms of employment.
With 95 housing units, a significant portion of which are owner-occupied, Bayview offers a sense of community and belonging. The neighborhood's employment rates and median household income reflect a community that is vibrant and industrious. Despite economic challenges faced by some, the spirit of Bayview remains resilient and hopeful.
