Mount Vernon is a neighborhood situated immediately north of downtown Baltimore, Maryland. Named after the Mount Vernon estate of George Washington, it was founded by John Eager Howard. The neighborhood was once home to the city's most fashionable and wealthiest families. Today, it has been designated as a city Cultural District and a National Historic Landmark District.
The cruciform arrangement of parks that surrounds the Washington Monument is the centerpiece of Mount Vernon. It depicts one of the nation's first representations of city planning for the sole purpose of highlighting a monument. In 1829, using Robert Mills' design, the construction of the Washington Monument was completed. In 1831, the Howard family was permitted to develop the parks surrounding the monument. The parks are now bounded by stately homes and are deemed the most optimum urban landscapes by the Beaux-Arts architectural firm of Carrere & Hastings.
In 1971, the neighborhood, west and south of the Washington Monument, was designated a National Historic Landmark District because of its importance in landscape and architecture planning. Older buildings still standing in the neighborhood were restored; however, many were converted into different architectural structures for more purposeful uses. Some of these historic buildings include the Charles Howard mansion – now the Mount Vernon Place United Methodist Church – the beaux-arts Belvedere Hotel, the Stafford Hotel, and the old Mount Vernon Hotel, which was once the mansion home of the U.S. Congressman William Julian Albert.
According to the Baltimore City Planning Commission, Mount Vernon is bounded by Eager St. to the north, Jones Falls Expressway (JFX) to the east, Franklin St. to the south, and Eutaw St. to the west. The Inner Harbor is only half a mile south of Centre St. Public transportation is essential for the residents and visitors of this neighborhood because of its location near downtown Baltimore. The Purple Line of Charm City Circulator transit service runs through Mount Vernon southbound on St. Paul St. and northbound on Charles St. Other transportation methods like the Light Rail line and the Metro Subway are also available.

In the past decades, Mount Vernon has developed more into a business neighborhood that houses many professional services such as legal and medical offices, architectural firms, publishing firms, and financial and insurance institutions. The neighborhood has become rich with nightlife, with the expansion of restaurants, cafes, bars, hotels, retail stores, art galleries, and other refreshment and entertainment establishments.
In 1977, the Gay and Lesbian Community Center of Baltimore (GLCCB), now known as the Pride Center of Maryland, was established. Since then, Mount Vernon has started forming into a gay village. It has accomplished LGBT milestones like the first Pride Parade and the creation of the GLCCB Health Clinic.
Mount Vernon schools, including the Baltimore School for the Arts on Cathedral Ave., are designated to the Baltimore City Public School District. In 2010, a charter secondary school for girls called Baltimore Leadership School for Young Women (BLSYW) was moved to the former headquarters of the Greater Baltimore Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA). It was the first public school to be established in the neighborhood in three decades.
Higher-level educational institutions located in Mount Vernon include Peabody Conservatory of the John Hopkins University, Maryland Institute College of Art, University of Baltimore, Baltimore School for the Arts and the Eubie Blake National Jazz Institute.
