Martin's Additions is a village in the county of Montgomery, Maryland. Located at geographical coordinates of 38.979713 degrees north latitude and 77.069349 degrees west longitude, it has a total area of 0.14 square miles. The village is just above the Maryland and District of Columbia state line and within proximity of the areas of Chevy Chase Section Five and Chevy Chase Section Three.
The history of Martin's Additions village dates back to 1896 when Harry M. Martin started purchasing and from the Chevy Chase Land Corporation. He called it "Martin's Additions to Chevy Chase." The area was later incorporated in 1916 as the special tax district of Martin's First, Second, Third and Fourth Additions to the Chevy Chase Village. On March 19, 1985, the special tax district was incorporated as a municipality named the Village of Martin's Additions after it was approved by the residents, Montgomery County, and the state of Maryland. As of the 2010 census, the population of Martin's Additions was 933 people.
The village of Martin's Additions consists of one shopping plaza. Situated on the west side of the area, it is bounded by Brookville Rd., Taylor St., and Turner Ln. The shopping plaza provides residents in the community with the following:
Across the street from the shopping plaza, on Taylor St., is the New Morning Farm Farmer's Market. It is one of the four market locations of the New Morning Farm – the others are located in Tenleytown, Sheridan School and Dupont Circle. Founded by Jim and Moie Kimball Crawford in 1972, the farmer's market satisfies the communities hunger for organic, local and sustainable food. Crops grown at New Morning Farm include Arugula, Basil, Beets, Bok Choi, Brussel Sprouts, Cabbage, Chard, Cilantro, Dill Fennel, Garlic, Scapes, Kale Kohlrabi, Okra, Parsnips, Yummy Snack, Radishes, Rhubarb, Sungolds, Turnips, and many more. The New Morning Farm Farmer's Market near Martin's Additions is only open on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Chevy Chase Local Park is a neighborhood park on the east side of Martin's Additions. Situated on Shepard St., it is operated by the Montgomery County Department of Parks. The park is open from dawn to dusk and offers a baseball field, tennis court, small multipurpose field and playground. In 1948, the 3.1-acre park was acquired by the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission.
