History of Greektown

Greektown is a neighborhood in Baltimore, Maryland. It is bounded by Lombard St. to the north, Interstate 895 to the east, O'Donnell St. to the south, and South Haven to the west. Once known as The Hill, the area has been a thriving Greek American community since the 1930s. In the 1980s, residents in the community petition the Baltimore City Council to change the neighborhood's name to Greektown. In 2001, efforts to revitalize Greektown began. As of 2010, it has a population that consists of the following racial breakdown:

  • 50.9% White
  • 22% Hispanic
  • 17.8% African American
  • 6.3% Asian
  • 3% All Other

Greektown is a diverse and thriving residential and business community that is made up of single-family townhomes, authentic Greek coffee houses, restaurants, bakeries and small businesses. It is served by the city-designated landmark building of Dr. John Ruhrah Elementary Middle School. Roads in the neighborhood follow the consecutive alphabet pattern that originated in the community of Highlandtown to the west. These streets are named:

  • Macon
  • Newkirk
  • Oldham
  • Ponca
  • Quail
  • Rappolla
  • Savage
  • Tolna
  • Umbra

As of 2014, Greektown has been home to approximately 600 families. At its peak, there were around 1,000 families in the area. The neighborhood is surrounded by the communities of Brewers Hill, Highlandtown, Fifteenth Street, Kresson, Baltimore Highlands, Bayview, Joseph Lee, Eastwood, and Medford - Broening.

Dr. John Ruhrah Elementary Middle School

Part of the Baltimore City Public Schools District, John Ruhrah Elementary Middle School was built in 1930. Located in Greektown, it is border by Rappola St. to the west, Foster Ave. to the north, Tolna St. to the east, and Fait Ave. to the south. The school serves grades pre-Kindergarten through eighth and has a population of 815 students. There is a student-to-teacher ratio of 14 to 1. Based on state test scores, only 11% of its students are at least proficient in reading and 12% in math. It has an overall grade of a C minus from Niche and a 3 out of 10 rating from GreatSchools.

St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church

The St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church has been serving the residents of Baltimore and its surrounding areas for over 69 years. Situated in the heart of the Greektown neighborhood on Ponca St., it is one of the 56 parishes that is part of the Metropolis of New Jersey. The church acts as an anchor and centerpiece to the Greektown community. It is home to the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Annual Festival and Greek Independence Day Parade. To worship at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, there is Orthos at 8:45 a.m., Sunday School at 10 a.m., and Divine Liturgy at 10 a.m. every Sunday.

Local Restaurants

Because of its diverse mix of ethnic backgrounds, Greektown is home to many authentic ethnic restaurants and eateries. Mostly situated along Eastern Ave., some of these dining options are El Rincon Troncaleño Restaurant & Bar, Charro Negro Bar & Grill, Panaderia Y Pasteleria B. Navarro, Karella's Cafe, Zorba's Bar & Grill, Asaditos Lounge, Hellas, Pupuseria Mama Tana, Greek Town Grill, Tom's Bar, Ikaros, and La China Poblana. Other restaurants scattered around the neighborhood include La Esquina Hondureña, Sugar Monkey Cookie, Samos, Jordy's bar & lounge, and La Taverna Ecuatoriana Restaurante.
