White Marsh is a census-designated place in Baltimore County, Maryland. An unincorporated and planned community, it is located at the geographical coordinates of 39.383621 degrees north latitude and 76.458315 degrees west longitude. Surrounding areas include Perry Hall to the north, Middle River to the south, Parkville to the west and Rosedale to the southwest.
White Marsh was founded in 1965 as the preferred site for intensive development. A town center was proposed to be developed at the planned intersection of White Marsh Blvd. and Walther Blvd., west of Belair Rd. The Harry T. Campbell Sons Corporation had owned thousands of acres of land east of the planned town center since the 1930s. Mined of its organic sand and gravel deposits, the land was covered with deep craters and pits. A new family-owned entity was later in charge of rejuvenating the property.
During the late 1960s, Nottingham Properties started analyzing the possibility of creating a new town in White Marsh. They wanted to incorporate several uses for the land and community services, including business, industrial, retail, and residential. In 1969, the county planned to build roads along a northeasterly direction running from Baltimore County through the Campbell land. Because of this, the County decided to shift the planned town center east, developing it on Campbell's 1,500 acres of land. The town center was planned to be situated in the triangle area created by the arterial roads. The center would feature a mall, with the density of businesses and residential developments decreasing as it moved farther away from it.
Between the planned White Marsh Blvd. and Silver Spring Rd., north of the town center, would be the development of a residential sector that included all residential densities besides high-rise. Offices and research facilities were to be in the area east of the center to Interstate 95. In addition, future industrial developments would be constructed on the Campbell land east of I-95.
In the Baltimore County Master Plan, the site was officially labeled the town center in 1979, after its rezoning was complete. The White Marsh Mall's development was completed in 1981 under the ownership of the Rouse Company. The oldest IKEA still standing was built right next to the mall's property. Since then, many more residential, office, research, and developmental buildings have been built.
