Geographic Location of Carney, MD

Carney, Maryland, is an unincorporated community in the county of Baltimore, Maryland. It is located at approximately 39.23 degrees north latitude and 76.31 degrees west longitude. Situated in the area between Gunpowder Falls State Park and Interstate-695, this census-designated place has a total area of 7.0 square miles. Because of its location, people in the Carney area have easy access to I-695 and US-1 (Belair Rd.)

History of Carney

The community of Carney, MD, was named after Thomas Carney. Thomas Carney was an Irish immigrant who immigrated to the U.S. and settled in Texas, MD, in 1880. After he married Mary DcDermot, they bought 40.5 acres of land on the southeast side of the Baltimore and Harford Turnpike. In 1885, Thomas Carney opened a general store called the Eight Mile House, on Harford Rd. and Joppa Rd., and moved his family there. In 1898, he built another home for his family on Thornewood Ct. located on the hill behind the store. These locations now stand as The Barn Restaurant and a real estate office, respectively. Gunpowder Falls State Park

Gunpowder Falls State Park was established in 1959. It is one of Maryland's largest state parks. Located on the northeast border of Carney, MD, this state park serves the communities in its surrounding areas and is there to help preserve the Gunpowder River and the Big and Little Gunpowder Falls. The park covers over 18,000 acres and is divided into six areas. This park is close by to the other historic parks of Parkville MD.

  1. The Hereford Area is ideal for hiking, fishing, and canoeing or kayaking. Visitors can also rent a room at Mill Pond Cottage to lodge in.
  2. Torrey C. Brown (TCB) Rail Trail is a 19.7 miles multi-use rail-trail used for walking, jogging, bicycling and horseback riding.
  3. Sweet Air Area can be used for hiking and horseback riding.
  4. Central Area is the oldest part of the park. This is where the Big and Little Gunpowder Falls and the Jerusalem Mill Historic Village are located.
  5. Hammerman Area is where visitors can enjoy some water fun. A swimming beach, picnic area, pavilions and playgrounds are offered here.
  6. Dundee Creek Marina offers a marina store, fuel, boat rents, and an area for boat launching.
