History of Roland Park

Roland Park is a community in Baltimore, Maryland. It was established in 1891 when the Chicago investment firm Jarvis and Conklin purchased 500 acres of land near Lake Roland. With $1 million in capital, they founded the Roland Park Company. However, the Panic of 1893 forced them to sell Roland Park Company to the firm of Stewart and Young.

The Roland Park Company hired several people to plan the development. These included:

  • Edward H. Bouton, a Kansas City developer, as the general manager
  • George Edward Kessler to lay out the tracts for the first lot
  • Olmsted Brothers to install expensive infrastructure and lay out the second tract
  • George E Waring, Jr. as a consultant for the installment of the sewer system

The development was considered modern with its use of electricity for lighting throughout the neighborhood and gas for cooking and lighting. In addition, around 50,000 feet of water mains were constructed, with 500 feet deep artesian wells, to provide a water source. 50,000 feet of roadways and 100,000 feet of sidewalks were also added to the community.

In 1903, Bouton and some Baltimore investors purchased Roland Park and reorganized the company. Bouton also placed restrictive covenants on all the properties in Roland Park. Against the advice of the Schmuker & Whitelock law firm, in 1912, the 'Nuisances' section of the deed was added to include the prohibition of any negro or person of negro descent to occupy the tracts. In 1914, Bouton also said he didn't sell to Jews because they were undesirable.

Although there were segregation and redlining in the community, there were many who found inspiration in Roland Park. Professor Frederick Law Olmsted, Jr. of the Harvard School of Design, cited Roland Park as a model residential subdivision to his students. Develop Duncan McDuffie called the area an ideal residential district. Developer Jesse Clyde Nichols also referred to the community as an ideal residential development.

Roland Park Shopping Center

Initially called the Roland Park Business Block, Roland Park Shopping Center was designed by Wyatt and Nolting and developed by the then president of the Roland Park Company, Edward Bouton. Located on the corner of Upland Rd. and Roland Ave., it was built in 1896 in the English Tudor architecture style.

The original plan was to have it be an apartment and office building. However, it opened with shops in 1907. The Guinness World Records has credited it as the world's first shopping center. Today, it houses a Petit Louis Bistro, Monument Sotheby's International Realty, Kimberly Yamas, LCSW-C, and Johnny's.

Baltimore Country Club

The Baltimore Country Club was founded on January 12, 1898. It was the first 18-hole course built in Maryland. Shortly after its opening, the 150-acre facility became the host of the fifth United States Open Championship. In 1926, it expanded to a second location in Lutherville, MD. The United States Golf Association has listed the country club as one of the first 100 clubs to be established in the U.S. One of the top 50 country clubs in the nation, it is one of only twelve clubs to operate on two campuses.

The Baltimore Country Club offers members amenities such as the five farms golf courses, a resort-like pool complex, two clubhouses, six duckpin bowling lanes, fitness and wellness facilities, fine dining, and a racquets program that include tennis, paddle and squash. It also hosts over 450 events, like cocktail themed happy hours and children's Santa parties, every year for its members. Membership for the country club includes two categories: Social and Golf. Prices vary for each, depending on the age group.
