In 1714, Edward Offutt received the "Clearwell" land grant from Lord Baltimore. Thus, starting the establishment of what is now known as Potomac. Officially named as Offutts Crossroads during the 18th century, Irishman and Civil War veteran John McDonald renamed it Potomac in 1881. However, Potomac didn't experience any developmental growth until two decades later when Thomas Perry, a general store owner, decided to build his home there. By the mid to late 20th century, Potomac had become a suburban community.
