Brief History of Potomac

In 1714, Edward Offutt received the "Clearwell" land grant from Lord Baltimore. Thus, starting the establishment of what is now known as Potomac. Officially named as Offutts Crossroads during the 18th century, Irishman and Civil War veteran John McDonald renamed it Potomac in 1881. However, Potomac didn't experience any developmental growth until two decades later when Thomas Perry, a general store owner, decided to build his home there. By the mid to late 20th century, Potomac had become a suburban community.

The once rural farming community is so suburban that the television network Bravo decided to create The Real Housewives of Potomac in 2016 to showcase the lives of Potomac housewives. On a more exciting note, popular t.v. series Beverly Hills, 90210 was based on Potomac native Darren Star's experience as a high schooler at Winston Churchhill High School.
