The land of Parkville was once known as Grindon. It was a rural community of small truck farms owned by German immigrants. In 1874, Baltimore surveyor, Simon Jonas Martenet, purchased around 35 acres of the land and named it Parkville. In 1911, a volunteer fire department was formed. Through the help of the community and the fundraising by the Ladies' Auxiliary, the company was able to purchase its first motor truck in 1918. In 1944, the Parkville Lions Club was founded. It consisted of clerical, business organizations, and professionals in the area. In 1946, the Parkville Lions Club purchased 43 acres of land. In 1952, they donated it to the Baltimore County Department of Recreations and Parks. This land later became Double Rock Park. The VFW Parkville Memorial Post 9083 World War II Monument was also built, in 1952, by the Parkville Americal Legion. It's located in Parkville Park Reservation. That same year, the Greater Parkville Community Council (GPCC) was also created. With their determination, a local library and post official were formed. In 1998, Parkville Park Reservation was added to the Baltimore County list of historic sites. Other historical sites located in Parkville, Maryland are the Hiss House and the Krause Memorial Park.
Now, Parkville is an unincorporated community located in the county of Baltimore, Maryland. According to the 2010 census. the population of people living in the census-designated place (CDP) of Parkville is 30,734. Parkville is also quite close to Towson, MD and the university.
Parkville Park has a long history that dates back to when Simon Jonas Martenet bought the land of Parkville. When Martenet went and donated a piece of his land to the people, his stipulation was that it always remained a park. This plot of land that he named Parkville is where the community of Parkville got its name. Currently, the Parkville Park Reservation is located on Taylor Ave. It is approximately at 39.22 degrees north latitude and 76.32 degrees west longitude.
The Dr. Louis Krause Memorial Park is a 14 acres plot of land that offers walking trails, picnic tables, a pavilion and a playground. What makes this park historic is the historic limestone kiln. In 1979, the historic kiln was restored by Baltimore County and housed at Krause Memorial Park.
Double Rock Park got its name from the twin boulders located alongside the stream in the park. The park is a popular designation for recreational activities in Parkville. Like the Krause Memorial Park, the trails in Double Rock Park is suitable for all level of expertise. There are two playgrounds, covered picnic areas, athletic fields, and a waterfall in this park.
