North Kensington is a census-designated place (CDP) in Montgomery County, Maryland. The unincorporated community is located at 39.227 degrees north latitude and 77.414 degrees west longitude. The CDP has a total area of 1.5 square miles.
In 2010, the population of people living in North Kensington, Maryland, was 9,514. This was a 6.4% increase from the 8,940 people recorded in 2000. Located in North Kensington, Rock Creek Woods is a historic district added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2004. The suburban development consists of 74 contemporary houses built between 1958 and 1961. These houses were designed by American architect Charles Goodman and built by developers Herschel and Marvin Blumberg.
Close by the Rock Creek Woods Historic District, near the heart of North Kensington, is Newport Mill Park. Situated next to Albert Einstein High School, the park features a playground, softball field, baseball field, multi-purpose field and picnic area. In 1955, Newport Mill Park was acquired by the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission. A playground renovation project was underway until 2020. The old playground was removed in spring 2020 and the new one opened that winter.
Just right outside the border of North Kensington, on the corner of University Blvd. W. and Veirs Mill Rd. is the Westfield Wheaton Shopping Mall or the Wheaton Plaza. The Wheaton Plaza caters to residents of North Kensington. The plaza consists of 116 stores. Some of these stores are Dollar Ocean, AAO Against All Odds, H&M, Victoria's Secret & PINK, Hot Topic, ELITE JEWELS, Express, XIOS, Finish Line, Sun's Jewelry and Clock, and Shoe City. The mall also has a recreational center for children called Kiddz Bounce. For food, options like McDonald's, Starbucks, Costco Food Court, Cinnabon and Tastee Ice Cream are available.
