About New Mark Commons

Built between 1967 and 1973, New Mark Commons is one of the first historic planned unit development located in Rockville, Maryland. It was designed, planned and built by the architectural firm Keyes, Lethbridge & Condon and builder Edmund J. Bennett. This team worked together to create a secluded residential area that includes winding roads, wooded landscape, recreational amenities, pedestrian walkways and cul-de-sacs. In 2017, National Park Service approved New Mark Commons' addition to the National Register of Historic Places. The community is also close to Potomac, MD and all that it offers.

Demographics

As of 2010, New Mark Commons's population consisted of 1,449 people. Seventy-four percent of this population are homeowners. The average age of homeowners here is around 50 years old.

Focal Points of New Mark Commons

There are two main focal points that everyone points out when they visit New Mark Commons: the trees and the lake.

One of the goals in the development of New Mark Commons was to preserve the nature of the forest it was going to occupy. Therefore, the team of architects and builders did their best to preserve the trees there. These older trees leave positive impressions on newcomers in the community. Some residents remark that they feel like they're living in the forest. The shade provided by these trees allows residents to enjoy the outdoors and meet their neighbors even on the hottest days. Although the landscapers hate the hassle of these trees, the homeowners association rules help preserve them.

The other focal point of New Mark Commons is its man-made lake. Half of the townhouses in the community are located around this lake. However, the lake does have an issue of attracting geese. Like how the HOA has rules to preserve the trees, their management also actively dispels the geese if they become a big nuisance. Some consider them exotic and adds to the tranquil atmosphere of New Mark Commons.

Dawson Farm Park

Dawson Farm Park, also known as "Rocky Glen," is a 7.2 acres park that features a nature trail, benches, park shelter, picnic tables, a playground, and an urban wildlife sanctuary. It's not just a park. Dawson Farm Park is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This is because there are two privately-owned farmhouses on the property. There's also a historic granary and barn.
