Silver Hill is an unincorporated community in Prince George's County, Maryland. This census-designated place (CDP) has a total area of 1.4 square miles. Located at 38.5026 degrees north latitude and 76.5632 degrees west longitude, it is approximately 1 mile southeast of Washington, D.C. Silver Hill, MD, is designated to the Prince George's County Public Schools System. Depending on where residents are living within the community of Silver Hill, families with children are zoned to one of the following schools.
The Smithsonian's Museum Conservation Institute is the center for specialized technical research, conservation and interpretation of artistic, anthropological, biological and historical objects for all Smithsonian museums and collections. It was established in 1963 as the Conservation Research Laboratory of the United States National Museum. In 1983, the laboratory moved to Suitland, MD, after its name was changed to the Conservation Analytical Laboratory (CAL) in 1965. In 1998, the center had another name change. Around this time, it was called the Smithsonian Center for Materials Research and Education (SCMRE). As of 2006, the Board of Regents finally settled on the name Museum Conservation Institute (MCI). Currently directed by Robert J. Koestler, MCI is located on Silver Hill Rd.
The Temple Hills Skate Palace is a roller-skating rink offering recreational activities to the residents of Silver Hill. Typically open from 6:30 p.m. to 1 a.m., the rink provides roller-skating lessons, rentals for private birthday parties and themed events. Some of these themed events include Cinco de Minions, Free Cookie Skate, Teacher Appreciation Skate Silent Headphone Skate, and Skate or Vogue. Admission tickets vary on the day and events that are going on.
