Mondawmin is a neighborhood in Baltimore City, Maryland. It is surrounded by the Whitelock Community, Lower Park Heights and Druid Hill Park. The neighborhood is bounded by Longwood St. and Hilton Pkwy. to the west. Liberty Heights Ave. and Druid Park Dr. to the north, Druid Hill Park and Fulton Ave. to the east, and North Ave. to the south.
In the 19th century, the area was estate countryside consisted of large homes built by prominent residents in the city. The area was named after the estates owned by Dr. Patrick Macaulay – a physician, city councilman, patron of the arts and B&O Railroad director. It is said that Dr. Macaulay got the name from the Indian corn god Mondamin after the poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow suggested it when he visited the estate.
In the late 1940s and early 1950s, many residents moved to the Mondawmin community as the area developed into a cultural and education center for African Americans. While public facilities and schools were still segregated, a renowned resident of the community Robert W. Coleman founded the first African American school for the blind. Because of the community's early pioneers and stability in homeownership, it was never designated as an area for urban renewal. Recently, Mondawmin was chosen as one of the six Healthy Neighborhoods by Baltimore city's government.
Coppin State University encompasses most of the west side of the Mondawmin neighborhood. Founded in 1900, it is a public historically black university that is a member-school of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund. The university was originally established at Colored High School (Douglass High School) on Pennsylvania Ave. by the Baltimore City School Board. In 1952, it was moved to its current 38-acre site on West North Ave. On April 13, 2004, the university was officially renamed Coppin State University, after being named Fanny Jackson Coppin Normal School and Coppin Teachers College. Mondawmin Mall is one of the most prominent establishments in Mondawmin. The three-level shopping mall was developed by the Mondawmin Corporation – a firm set up by Hunter Moss and James Rouse under the Moss-Rouse Company in 1952. Opened on October 14, 1956, the mall was called Mondawmin Center and had an open-air plan featuring 58 store spaces., a three-level Sears, Food Fair and Penn Fruit supermarkets, a G.C. Murphy 5 out of 10, and a spiral staircase. In 1963, renovations done to the center enclosed it. The Mondawmin Center was then renamed Mondawmin Mall.
After the Mondawmin Mall was acquired by Chicago-based General Growth Properties, it underwent a $68 million renovation between 2007 and 2008 to better serve the community. Now, the mall is owned and managed by Brookfield Properties. It offers Target, Marshalls, Shoppers Food & Pharmacy, America's Kids, Madrag, Olive Olé, Treasures The Diamond Place, Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen, and Planet Fitness.
