History of Londontowne

Londontowne is an unincorporated area in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. The former census-designated place (CDP) is now part of the Edgewater CDP. Also known as London Town, it was a colonial seaport settlement founded by an act of 1683. Colonel William Burgess, one of the area's first settlers, parceled and sold his land to develop the town. He was also the person who built the original wharf in the area.

Once prominent in trade like Annapolis and Williamsburg, VA, and considered as the site for the Province of Maryland, Londontowne declined and disappeared by the 1800s because of economic depression, its non-selection as a tobacco inspection station, and the Revolutionary War. Today, the area in which the previous town was located is home to the Historic London Town and Gardens.

Historic London Town and Gardens

The Historic London Town and Gardens is a 23-acre open-air park that was established in 1971. Located on Londontown Rd. on the South River, the "lost" colonial town and garden sanctuary is owned by Anna Arundel County and operated by the nonprofit organization London Town Foundation. It includes the London Town Publik House, reconstructed period buildings, an archaeology lab, a public museum and extensive gardens.

The park offers guided walking and virtual tours, educational events, musket firing demonstrations, and rental venues for events. The Historic London Town and Gardens are open Wednesdays through Sundays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The park closes its gates at 4 p.m. Admission fees are $10 for adults, 49 for seniors (62 & up), $5 for youth (7-17), $3 for children (4-6), and free for members and those 3 and under. Discounts are available for AAA and Active Military.

London Town Publik House

The London Town Publik House is also often referred to as the William Brown House. Built by William Brown between 1758 and 1764, it is a Georgian architectural style two-story brick structure that uses all-header-bonds on all four sides of the house. The house and property was a splurge for Brown, so he had to give them over to the estate of his creditor James Dick, when his debt caught up to him. In 1828, Anne Arundel County acquired the house and used it as an almshouse until 1965. On April 15, 1970, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) and declared a National Historic Landmark. Today, the London Town Publik House sits at the heart of the Historic London Town and Gardens and serves as a museum. Virtual tours of the building can be taken to learn more about its history.

The Gardens at London Town

The Gardens at London Town is a certified Level II Arboretum by ArbNet and offers a diverse horticultural experience to its visitors. It is comprised of the Woodland Garden, Ornamental Gardens, Sound and Sensory Garden, and Living Roof Garden. Native trees featured in the 8-acre Woodland Garden are magnolias, dogwoods, camellias, rhododendrons and viburnums, spring bulbs, shade-loving perennials and woodland wildflowers.
