Short History of Glenarden

Glenarden is a city in Maryland. Part of Prince. George's County, it was developed by W. R. Smith in 1919, when he purchased a group of properties about 10 miles east of Washinton, D.C. The residential community consisted of only 15 people. Thirty years later, the African-American, middle-class suburban community petitioned for incorporation as the Town of Glenarden. On March 30, 1939, the charter was granted. This made the community the third predominantly black incorporated town in Maryland.

Today Glenarden sits adjacent to the areas of Springdale to the northeast, Palmer Park to the southwest, Capitol Heights to the southwest and Lanham to the northwest. The most prominent highway passing through the city is the Capital Beltway and Interstate-95. As of the 2010 census, it has a population of 6,000 people.

Museum Resource Center - National Capital Area

The Museum Resource Center - National Capital Area is the central curatorial facility for the national capital region of the National Park Service. It is responsible for the preservation and care of museum objects for park units in Maryland, West Virginia, Virginia and the District of Columbia. Objects that are not currently on exhibit at the various historic properties and homes throughout the region are housed at the center. The center is not open to the public; however, researchers are able to view the collections by appointment.
