A Timeline of Lansdowne

A census-designated place (CDP), Lansdowne is located in southern Baltimore County, Maryland. It was established in 1892 when the Whitaker Iron Company mined the area for ores.  During this period, the area comprised of mostly farmlands. When the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad was constructed, Lansdowne became known as a B&O town because most of the residents worked for the company. As the town started to develop, churches were seen being established. Some of these early churches include:

  • Lutheran Church of Our Savior
  • St. Clements Catholic Church
  • Lansdowne United Methodist Church
  • Lansdowne Christian Church
  • First Baptist Church

In 1977, the Hull Memorial Christian Church, or the Lansdowne Christian Church, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). In the 1950s, new schools were built to accommodate the growing population of families with children. As a result, the Golden Education Triangle – Lansdowne Elementary School, Lansdowne Middle School and Lansdowne Senior High – was created. The Baltimore County Recreation and Parks opened the Southwest Area Park for public recreational usage in the 1980s. The early 2000s saw a redevelopment of a Lansdowne library and an establishment of the Lansdowne Station. Read more to learn about the area of Morrell Park.

The church was donated by Civil War veteran Charles W. Hull and his wife to honor the Union soldiers of the Civil War. In 1905, three beautiful stained glass windows were given to the church and remain intact today.
