The Historic District

Kensington is a town located in the county of Montgomery, Maryland. The area of Kensington was first established in 1873 as Knowles Station. In the 1890s, when Washington D.C. developer Brainard Warner purchased land to build his planned Victorian community, he named it Kensington Park. Being the largest subdivision, the area came to be known as the Town of Kensington. The town had a church, local newspaper and library. It was officially named Kensington when it was incorporated in 1894. In 1980, the original southernmost section of Kensington –its historic core – was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Since then, Kensington has grown into a commuter suburb and includes North Kensington.

The one in Kensington is an outdoor street festival located on Howard Ave., in the Historic Old Town Kensington. The festival features live music, author readings, storytellers, books, open mic, and activities for children and adults. The event is when local authors, publishers, book artists, booksellers and literary groups come together to show, sell and talk about their books.

Held at the same time as the Kensington Day of the Book Festival is the Gala Craft Fair. Located on Armory Ave., local art and craft vendors gather to display and sell their works.

Since 1994, the Kensington 8K Race has been held annually around late Sept. The event includes three distances: 8km, 2mi and 1km. Attracting visitors and participants from all over the D.C. region, the event runs through the historic core of Kensington.

Warner Circle Park

Warner Circle Park is one of the many parks that serve the residents living in Kensington. However, Warner Circle Park is the only one located in the heart of the Kensington Historic District. Sitting on 4.5 acres of land, the park was acquired by the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission around 2005 and 2006 through the Legacy Open Space program. It was an initiative to preserve the historic landscape and buildings within the park. Listed on the Montgomery County Master Plan for Historic Preservation and the National Register of Historic Places, these historic buildings include a Queen Anne Style House and a 1914 carriage house.
