Seabrook: Past to Present

Seabrook is an unincorporated community in Prince George's County, Maryland. The census-designated place is surrounded by the areas of Goddard, Lanham, Westgate, Mitchellville and Glenn Dale. Before 2010, it was part of the Lanham-Seabrook CDP. However, the United States Census Bureau separated the two for the 2010 census and reported Seabrook as having a population of 17,287.

The development of Seabrook goes hand-in-hand with that of the Washington Branch of the Baltimore and Potomac Railroad. In 1871, an engineer for the railroad, Thomas Seabrook, purchased 500 acres of land around the location of one of the planned stations to create a retreat community. A year later, the railroad's main branch into Washington, D.C., opened with stations located in Lanham, Seabrook, Glenn Dale, and many others. By the 1880s, a station building, three Gothic cottages, commercial buildings and a schoolhouse had been built in the community.

By 1957, the community of Seabrook had approximately 185 houses situated along 10 streets. Most of the red brick homes along Maryland Route 564 (Landham Severn Rd.) were developed to serve the employees at the newly established NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. Today, even after the development of apartment complexes and commercial buildings during the recent years of developer expansion, the community remains a residential area with single homes surrounded by green lawns and century-old oak trees. Explore the old schoolhouse and several early dwellings that still stand in the area.
