History of Lauraville

Lauraville is a neighborhood in the northeast part of Baltimore, Maryland. It is bounded by Harford Rd. to the east, Echodale Ave. to the north, Argonne Dr. and the Herring Run Park to the south, and Morgan Park and Morgan State University to the west. Communities surrounding the area include Harford - Echodale - Perring Parkway, Loch Raven, Perring Loch, Stonewood - Penwood - Winston, Hillen, Arcadia - Beverly Hills Historic District, Moravia - Walther, Waltherson, Glenham - Belford, and Hamilton.

The neighborhood of Lauraville officially became a village and got its own post office shortly after the American Civil War. It was named after the daughter of John Henry Keene, a local property owner and chief support for the village post office. In the late 1800s, the area became self-sufficient; any necessity needed for the house or farm could be bought locally. Carpenters and blacksmiths practiced their crafts along Harford Rd., and truck farms offered the following:

  • Locally raised produce
  • Fresh meat
  • Poultry
  • Dairy products

The brewery Weber's Park was established with picnic grounds and a beer garden to serve as a space for gatherings and recreational fun. A fire station was also built for the volunteer fire company. In the 1870s, the limited horse-drawn passenger service of the Hall Springs Passenger Railway was opened on Harford Rd. It eventually merged into the United Railways and Electric Company street railway system. In 1918, most of the Lauraville area was annexed to Baltimore City. The nearby Ivy Mill property was also sold to build Morgan State University.

The Lauraville area was built by various developers over a period of years. Most of its homes are detached, single-family frame or cedar shingle structures developed around 1910 and 1930. The community has a population of 4,194 people and gives off a sparse suburban feel. 82% of the residents own their homes. The median value of a home in the area is $192,125. The median rent is $1,113.
