In 1832, local politician and entrepreneur William H. Freeman designed and developed Franklintown. His design featured an oval plan radiating out from a central wooded park. There is the Franklin Mill, the commercial area, and the Freeman's Oval making up the area. Key buildings feature the "I" House form with steeply pitched cross gables, a design that is often seen throughout rural Maryland.
In 2001, the Franklintown Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places. What makes this place unique is the early date of planning, very few planned communities have such an early start. At the time of development, the town would have sat outside of the industrial city of Baltimore. Freeman had a plan to use elements of the Picturesque Movement and architectural elements to make the area unique.
Today, the area is home to about 1,200 residents who are attracted to the serene environment and nearby Gwynns Falls and Leakin Park. Freeman's Oval has been renamed Hill Street and is now residential.
One of the original structures, the mill, and its buildings were constructed of Fieldstone. The mill itself is 2 stories and in the 1950s it was converted into a private home. The wheel is no longer present but you can see the strong resemblance to other gristmill designs.
The mill backs onto the Dead Run stream. Originally, this stream would have provided power to the mill. The gristmill would have ground cereal grain into flour and middling. There would not have been many workers as the mill would depend heavily on the skilled miller. Because of this, there are no workers' dwellings nearby.
In 1832, the property owned by William Freeman became an inn. Today, the inn is used as an event space. It hosts reunions, weddings, birthday parties, and community association meetings. The Inn has been renovated over the years offering the event space as well as accommodating the owner. Both the Beltway and I-70 are located close by as well as Edmonson Avenue, a direct route into Baltimore.
