A Timeline of Finksburg

Finksburg is an unincorporated community on the border of Carroll County and Baltimore County. Park of Carroll County, the area is located at the intersection of Maryland Route 91 and Maryland Route 140. It is six miles southeast of the city of Westminster and one mile northwest of the Liberty Reservoir.

Finksburg was named after the early 1800s owner of local tavern and toll road, Adam Fink. The historical timeline of the community is as follows:

  • 1849: the Patapsco Mining Company and Edward Remington opened cobalt mines near the area
  • 1855: The Western Maryland Railroad reached the area
  • 1856: A. L. Hoover became postmaster of Finksburg
  • 1858: Cobalt mines closed down due to lack of profit
  • 1866: Baseball became the most popular sport in the area. The "Star" was the local team of Finksburg
  • 1873: The Alpha Farmers' Club of Carroll County was created
  • 1881: Friday Night lectures were organized by the Finksburg Literary Society at the Mechanics' Hall meetings
  • 1888: A canning corn business was being operated by L. A. J. Lamotte
  • 1935: The three-room stone building of Sandymount Elementary School was developed
  • 2002: The Gerstell Academy, an independent K-12 school, was opened.
  • 2008: Cold Saturday was added to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP)
  • 2009: The Taylor-Manning-Leppo House was listed on the NRHP.
  • 2009: The first green building in Carroll County, the Finksburg Branch of the Carroll County Public Library, was opened.

Today, the Reese & Community Volunteer Fire Company protects the community. Finksburg is served by the Carroll County Public Schools System. Schools designated to the area are Sandymount Elementary School, Shiloh Middle School and Westminster High School.

Cold Saturday

Cold Saturday, also known as Cold Saturday Farm, was built in 1800. The historic home and farm complex embodies the characteristics seen of Anglo-American gentry farms during the Tidewater region. Located near Finksburg, the 11.6-acre farm was added to the NRHP on December 11, 2008.

Taylor-Manning-Leppo House

The Taylor-Manning-Leppo House is another historic home near Finksburg, on Patapsco Rd. Built around 1860 on a stone foundation, it is a 2 and 1/2-story log and frame architectural style house, with an exposed front exterior. The house was added to the NRHP on July 15, 2009.

Roaring Run Community Park

The Roaring Run Community Park provides a recreational space for residents of Finksburg. The small sports complex is located off of Old Westminster Pike and offers four baseball diamonds. Sadly, pets are not allowed in the park.

Sandymount Park

Sandymount Park is a park on Baltimore Blvd. It is situated adjacent to Sandymount Elementary School and the Carrol County Public Library - Finksburg Branch. The park features a basketball court, playground, tennis courts, three baseball diamonds, six grass athletic fields, walking paths, picnic areas and park benches.
