Chase: Past to Present

Chase is an unincorporated community in the eastern part of Baltimore County, Maryland. It is located on the waterfront of the Middle River, Gunpowder River, Saltpeter Creek, Dundee Creek and the Chesapeake Bay. Surrounding areas include Bowleys Quarters, Essex, Middle River and Aberdeen Proving Grounds.

The community that is Chase was founded in 1850 as Chase's Sation, a stop for the Baltimore Railroad. After the Civil War, it was populated by freed African American slaves. Farms and residents were established along the Eastern Avenue Extended. As situated along the Eastern Avenue Extended was the community of Bennies that was founded later in the 1800s. Established as a rural African American community like Chase, the two communities grew together and eventually became known as Bengies-Chase, or just Chase. Further timeline of Chase is as follows:

• Up until the mid-1900s - It remained a primarily African American rural community.
• 1939 to 1945 - Population increased because of the Glenn L. Martin Company aircraft plant opening in Middle River.
• After the mid-1900s - Used as a suburb of Baltimore City.
• 1959 - Captial Airlines Flight 75 crashed in the area while it was en route from La Guardia Airport to Atlanta Airport.
• The 1980s - The community became part of the 21220 zip code.
• 1987 - Amtrak Train 94 crashed into a Conrail freight locomotive in the area. Killing 14 passengers, it was the deadliest crash at the time.
• 2000 - Joseph Palczynski, a resident of Chase, murdered three people in Bowleys Quarters and a fourth victim in Chase.

Efforts to revitalize the community of Chase have been underway way since the 1900s. These efforts include the late-1990s razing of half of the Tidewater Village, or Whispering Woods. In 2006, the MD 43 extension was also opened. This was followed by the addition of sidewalks along Eastern Ave. in 2007.

Gunpowder Falls State Park: Hammerman Area

The Gunpowder Falls State Park: Hammerman Area is a recreational space in Chase. Part of the Gunpowder Falls State Park, it is situated on Graces Quarters and open daily from 8 a.m. to sunset in April through October. In November through March, it is also open every day from 10 a.m. to sunset. The Hammerman Area provides the residents and visitors of Chase a 1,500-foot beach and swimming area, beach bathhouse, playgrounds, food concessions, canoe and kayak rentals, fishing, short hiking trails, day-use picnic pavilions and tables.

Marshy Point Nature Center

Located on Marshy Point Rd., the Marshy Point Nature Center is a facility of the Baltimore County Department of Recreation and Parks. Opened in the spring of 2000, the land on which the center lies was acquired by the county from the Weiskittel and Zelinski families in 1982. Featured events offered are Nature Center Update, Community Garden, Pre-K Nature, Animal Encounters and Nature Storytime. Programs included at the center are Marshy Point Kids, School, Group and Outreach Programs, Chesapeake Adventurers Pre-K, Nature Birthday Parties, Speaker Series, Summer Camp, and Summer Solstice Faerie Festival. Marshy Point Nature Center is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
