History of Brooklyn

Brooklyn is one of the neighborhoods in the southernmost part of Baltimore, Maryland. The main roads serving the area are South Hanover St., Potee St., E. Patapsco Ave., 6th St., 10th St., and W. Bay Ave. Part of Baltimore City County, the neighborhood shares the 21225 ZIP Code with the nearby neighborhood of Cherry Hill and the Brooklyn Park area of Anne Arundel County.

The neighborhood of Brooklyn was founded in 1853 by Patapsco Land Company of Baltimore City. On December 26, 1911, King Johnson was taken out of his jail cell by a mob, shot four times and lynched. No one was ever tried for his killing. In 1918, the neighborhood was annexed to the City of Baltimore. During the mid to late 1900s, Brooklyn was home to many of the maritime and steel workers from Bethlehem Steel's Fairfield shipyard. Today, it is an ethnically diverse neighborhood consisting of mostly low-income and lower middle class residents. Crime and drug trafficking have increased in the area, but plans for gentrification are in the works.

Masonville Cove Environmental Education Center

Masonville Cove Environmental Education Center is a focal point for community efforts and school programs. Designed and built by Baltimore Green Construction, the center was opened on Earth Day in 2009 by Lt. Governor Anthony Brown. The "Near-Zero Net Energy Building" was part of a $153 million restoration effort for the cove. Providing free public education programs and events year-round to the community, the center is open Mondays through Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Garrett Park

Garrett Park is a 7.5-acre neighborhood park within the boundaries of Chesapeake Ave., Maude Ave., 3rd St., E. Patapsco Ave., and 2nd St. The land for the park was donated to the city in the mid-1910s by Robert Garrett – first gold medal winner and world record holder of the discus throw during the 1896 modern Olympics. However, it was rejected until the 1920s. On May 25, 1924, the City of Baltimore opened Garrett Park to the Brooklyn neighborhood. It featured the following:

  • Six swing sets for older kids
  • Four toddler swings
  • Sliding boards
  • A large covered sandbox
  • Two teeter-totters
  • A giant tin barrel rotating on an iron bar
  • A merry-go-round

Because the park sits on a hill with no trees and strong winds, many residents were seen flying their kites there. However, those recreations didn't last long. Today, the park provides open space, park benches, picnic tables, paved walking paths, and an outdoor basketball court.
