The Community of Highlandtown

The area of Highlandtown was once known as Snake Hill. It was established in 1866 by German American settlers. It was renamed "Highland Town" in 1870, for the view it offers over the city. In 1919, it became part of Baltimore City. The community of Highlandtown is part of the Patterson Park/Highlandtown Historic District in the National Register of Historic Places. The German, Polish, Italian, Greek, Irish and Ukrainian population that once made up this area is now being influenced by the growing population of the Latino community coming into Highlandtown.

Demographics

Based on the 2010 census, there were 7,820 people living in the community of Highlandtown, MD. The racial makeup of this community is:

  • 34% Hispanic
  • 19.7% African American
  • 2.3% All Other Races

The median household income in the area was $28,813. 59.8% of the population owned their homes. About 22.6% of the population lived below the poverty line.

Highlandtown Arts and Entertainment District

Also known as "ha!", the Highlandtown Arts District is the largest art and entertainment designation in the state of Maryland. The district encompasses the neighborhoods of Highlandtown, Baltimore Highlands, Patterson Park, and parts of Canton and Greektown. The area is known for its cultural diversity, extensive retail and industrial spaces, and affordable housing. This art and entertainment district is home to events like the Great Halloween Lantern Parade, Parade of Latin Nations, Artket Festival, Salsapolalooza, Highlandtown Wine Festival, and the Creative Alliance. The district is also a hub for makers, whether they be designers, jewelry makers, pinata makers, sculptors, coffee roasters, or chefs.

Local Attractions

Within the Highlandtown Arts and Entertainment District lies many unique attractions. Art Galleries like SkyLofts and Y:ART features different artists regularly so visitors can experience new forms of art in the same location. People can also rent out spaces at SkyLofts to host their events.

The Highlandtown Train Garden gives another unique aspect to the neighborhood of Highlandtown. The train garden is located on S. Conkling St., in the heart of Highlandtown. Built and run by local volunteers, the Highlantown Train Garden features the landmarks of South Baltimore in miniature versions.
