Goddard is an unincorporated community in Prince George's County, Maryland. The area had a population of 5,554 people, 1,348 families and 2,097 households during the 2000 census. In 2010, the United States Census Bureau no longer counted it as a census-designated place (CDP). The community of Goddard was named after the physicist Robert H. Goodard. It is served by the Prince George's County Public Schools District. Schools zoned for the area include Cathern T. Reed Elementary School, Magnolia Elementary School, Thomas Johnson Middle School, Greenbelt Middle School, DuVal High School and Eleanor Roosevelt High School.
DuVal High School is one of the designated schools that is located within the area of Goodard – the other being Catherine T. Reed Elementary School and Magnolia Elementary School. Duval High is a comprehensive science and technology magnet high school that serves grades 9 through 12. Established in 1960 to relieve overcrowding from other high schools in the area, it has a population of 2,022 students and a student-to-teacher ratio of 17 to 1. Based on state test scores, 47% of the students in Duval High are at least proficient in reading 19% in math. The school has a GreatSchools rating of a 4 out of 10 and an overall Niche grade of a C minus.
The Goddard Space Flight Center is a NASA space research laboratory in the community of Goddard. Located on Greenbelt Rd., it is the first and oldest space flight center ever built by NASA. The center was established on May 1, 1959, and employs around 10,000 civil servants and contractors.
One of the ten major NASA field centers to be named after American rocket propulsion pioneer Robert H. Goddard, it conducts scientific investigations, development of related technologies, and manufacturing and operation of space systems. Many of the NASA and international missions operations it manages are the Explorers Program, the Hubble Space Telescope, the Earth Observing System, the Discovery Program, the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory, the Solar Dynamics Observatory, INTEGRAL, MAVEN, OSIRIS-REx, Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System, Fermi, and Swift.
Presley Manor Park is a neighborhood park on Presley Rd. in the area of Goddard. Catering to residents in the community, it is owned and operated by the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission. The park features recreation opportunities such as open space, paved linear trails, an outdoor basketball court, a tennis court, an outdoor practice wall, a playground, and picnic tables.
Cipriano Square is the only shopping plaza in the Goddard community. The previous home of K-mart, it is situated at the intersection of Cipriano Rd. and Greenbelt Rd. Shopping and dining options provided at the plaza are Burger King, Ruby Tuesday, Weakness For Sweetness, T-Mobile, Hershey's Ice Cream, Five Guys, Osaka Restaurant, Good Jerry, The UPS Store, Orion Gourmet Take Away, and GQ Palace Restaurant and Lounge.
