Garrison is a census-designated place (CDP) in the county of Baltimore, Maryland. Located at 39.401055 degrees north latitude and 76.751073 degrees west longitude, the community sits adjacent to Owings Mills and has a total area of 3.2 square miles. The main roads in the area are Reisterstown Rd., Mt. Wilson Ln., McDonogh Rd., Greenspring Valley Rd., Garrison Forest Rd., Cradock Ln., and Green Tree Rd.
As of the 2010 census, Garrison has a population of 8,823 people – most of them are made up of families and young professionals. The area gives off an urban, suburban mix feel. Homes in Garrison value around $245,500. The median rent is $1,496. About 53% of the residents own their homes. Families with children living in these homes are served by the Baltimore County Public Schools (BCPS) System.
Woodholme Elementary School is the only BCPS located in the neighborhood of Garrison. The school has a population of 799 students and serves grades Kindergarten through fifth. There is a student-to-teacher ratio of 17 to 1. Woodholme Elementary has a Greatschools rating of a 4 out of 10 and an overall Niche grade of a B minus.
Ner Israel Rabbinical College, or Yeshivas Ner Yisroel, is located in proximity to Woodholme Elementary School. Founded by the Rosh HaYeshiva, Moreinu v'Rabbeinu Harav Yaakov Yitzchok Ruderman zt"l, in 1933, the college helps talmidim from all over the world who wish to achieve their full potential in Gadlus baTorah and Avodas Hashem. Ner Israel Rabbinical College offers three divisions: Yeshiva, Mechina and Kollel.
Founded in 1910, Garrison Forest School is a private educational institution located in the community. With a 110-acre campus, the school consists of a coed Preschool and an all-girls Kindergarten through 12th grade. From grades eight through 12, a boarding program is available for regional, national and international students. There is a student to faculty ratio of 7.6 to 1.
Garrison Forest School offers four signature programs to its students. The Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) program is a partnership with The Johns Hopkins Univerity. Students are put in semester-long mentorships at Hopkin's research labs. The James Center offers experiential and service learning, leadership training, financial literacy and STEM opportunities. Incorporating technology, programming and research skills, the Imagineering is an engineering-focused program that starts from Preschool through fifth grade. Finally, the Creative Co-op is a community-owned space used for nurturing a culture of curiosity, discovery and making.
Garrison has many shopping centers that cater to its residents. Situated along the west side of Reisterstown Rd., these centers include Foundry Row, Saint Thomas Shopping Center and Valley Center. Some of the stores and dining options offered are the following:
Just outside the CDP of Garrison is the Woodholme Country Club. Forty-nine "founding fathers" established it in 1927 on the former home and farm of Dr. Theodore Cook. This championship golf course features an 18-hole, par-73 course, 15 tennis courts, an Olympic-sized swimming pool, a wading pool, tennis and golf pro shops, the Snack Shop and the 50,000 square foot main clubhouse. The Woodholme Country Club also offers the Learning Center, which includes a junior supper camp, junior clinic and adult clinic. Social or sports memberships can be inquired on their website.
