Bowleys Quarters is a census-designated place (CDP) in Baltimore County, Maryland. This unincorporated community has the coordinates of 39.32139 degrees north latitude and 76.38833 degrees west longitude. The area was named after the merchant and sea captain Daniel Bowley who used it to house his slaves. Bowleys Quarters later became a game preserve for waterfowl and ducks. Famous individuals like Babe Ruth and previous presidents have hunted here.
Because of its recreation, the area started becoming a vacation spot, with many summer homes built up along the water. During the industrial boom in the 1920s through the 1950s, many blue-collar workers settled in Bowleys Quarters to work at the nearby Glenn L. Martin Company and Bethlehem Steel.
However, when the Glenn L. Martin Company downsized and other companies around the area went out of business, the community of Bowleys Quarters experienced an economic downturn. Thus, the community became a mix of middle-class homes. In the 1990s, interest in waterfront property began to increase.
After Hurricane Isabel hit and left devastating damages to Bowleys Quarters, revitalization of the neighborhood started. The community is now a prime location for waterfront living. Some new homes are even listed for over $1 million.
Opened from dawn to dusk, Miami Beach Park is a park in Bowleys Quarters. It is operated by the Baltimore County Recreation and Parks and features a playground, nature trail, pavilion and grills. Although the park is located on the beautiful Chesapeake Bay, swimming is not permitted. However, kayaks, canoes, paddleboards and other small crafts rental are offered there through the Eastern Watersport. Rental rates range from $20 to $280, depending on whether the renter wants it hourly, daily or weekly. Rentals are on a first come, first served basis.
