The Two Sides of Twinbrook

A large residential subdivision in Rockville, Maryland, Twinbrook was established on Oct. 18, 1946, by four developers. The Twinbrook developers were Joseph L. Geeraert, Roland Simmon, Wesley Sauter and Donald Gingery.

Before the area of Twinbrook was developed, Native American tribes inhabited it before the 18th century. In 1720, Lord Baltimore decided to give out land in this area as land grants to those who made early purchases, donations or performed services for Great Britain. This included Caleb Litton and local tavern owner Adam Robb. In 1873, John Hillaery Bogley purchased around 200 acres of Adam Robb's land and sold it later to Lillian M. Small in 1925. Small ended up selling the land in 1946 to the Twinbrook developers for $94,000.

Taking inspiration from the planned communities of Levittown in New York and Oak Ridge in Tennessee and the Usonian homes created by American architect Frank Lloyd Wright, Twinbrook began development shortly after the purchase. The first section was developed in the area south of Veirs Mill Rd. The homes were initially priced from $9,250 to $11,500. In Sept. 1948, the first owners purchased their home. Rockville annexed Twinbrook into the city the year after.

By 1952, over 300 houses had been built. Most of them were Cape Cod style and occupied by World War II veterans. In honor of those veterans, the streets in the southern section were named after World War II engagements and related locations. The lots and streets of Twinbrook were also designed to respect the natural topography of the area. After 1952, the Twinbrook Forest was added on the north side of Veirs Mill Rd.
