History of Essex

Essex, Maryland, is an unincorporated community. It is a census-designated place in the county of Baltimore, Maryland. Established in 1909 by the Taylor Land Company, the community was created to provide Baltimore residents a place to live outside of the city limits. In 1910, the first general store in Essex was built by Henry Guttenberger. The Essex Methodist and St. John's Luthern churches and a fire station soon followed. These properties were built on lands donated by the Taylor Land Company. Later, the Glenn L. Martin Company became the biggest reason for the rapid growth of Essex. However, this development didn't last long. Today, there are plans in progress to move the Essex area into the 21st century. Run-down, low-income housings are removed, new medians and pavements are added to the roads, and a new single-family home community called Waterview was created.

The Heritage Society of Essex and Middle River

The Heritage Societ of Essex and Middle River, Inc. is a non-profit organization established in 1968. Staffed by only volunteers, the organization's mission is to preserve the history of Essex and Middle River, Maryland. They had their first meeting on Sept. 26th, 1968, at Essex Elementary School. Seven years later, on Sept. 26th, 1975, the organization opened its Museum at Essex's first fire station. The Museum is open to the public from April 1st through Oct. 31st. Museum hours are from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. A popular activity for visitors to the Museum is the Ghost Hunts. Guests can spend the evening investigating the haunted areas of the Museum. Other visitors have the option to go on guided tours every half hour. Unfortunately, the Museum has a no-pet policy.

Ballestone-Stansbury House

Built around the late 1700s and early 1800s, the Ballestone-Stansbury House is a historic home in Essex, Maryland. It is a fine example of the Federal architectural style. Because of the persistence of the Heritage Society of Essex and the Essex-Middle River Bicentennial Committee to preserve the house, the county of Baltimore bought the property. Now part of Rocky Point Park, the historic home is a museum that features spring and summer exhibits, Civil War reenactments, Sunday tours, tea plate luncheons, Halloween activities and holiday tours. There are also works of Early American Art, from the 1780s to 1880s, on display in the museum. Small weddings, parties and tours can be reserved in advance. Due to some incorrect title search back in the 1970s, the home is now known as Ballestone Manor. In 1975, Ballestone Mansion was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

Baltimore County Cox's Point Park

Cox's Point Park is a 25.9-acre waterfront park located on Riverside Dr. in Essex, Maryland. Opened daily from dawn to dusk, the park features amenities like a playground with swings and slides, picnic tables, charcoal grills, pavilions, fishing, and a boat ramp. In 2009, Cox's Point Park was used to host the 100th birthday celebration of the community of Essex. There was live music performed by local artists like Joey McCann, Maria Rose, Mickey Light and Don "Big Daddy Country" Cox. Looking for more to do? Visit the neighboring community of Middlesex.
