Biography of Dundalk

The census-designated place (CDP) of Dundalk is an unincorporated community in Baltimore County, Maryland. It has a total area of 17.4 square miles. Named after Dundalk, Ireland, this community was one of the first inner-ring suburbs established in Baltimore.

The English explorer John Smith was the first to explore the area of Dundalk back in 1608. Dundalk was founded in 1856 when Henry McShane established the McShane Bell Foundry. When the Baltimore and Sparrows Point Railroad asked him for a name of a storing place for the foundry, he wrote Dundalk, after his birthplace. In 1916, the Bethlehem Steel Company bought 1,000 acres of land near the foundry. They used this farmland to develop housing for their shipyard workers. The Dundalk Company was formed to plan the town.

By 1917, Dundalk proper was established. The community had 62 houses, a post office, two stores and a telephone exchange. Dundalk was once called "Little Appalachia" or "hillbilly ghetto," when Appalachian people migrated to the community looking for work. In 1983, Dundalk was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

The McShane Bell Foundry

Established in 1856, the McShane Bell Foundry is the largest Western-style bell maker in the U.S. It was featured in one of the episodes of Dirty Jobs on the Discovery Channel. Over the past 165 years, the foundry has produced over 300,000 bells. These bells are seen in cathedrals, churches, government buildings and schools around the world. One of its earlier production, the 7,000-pound bell, still hangs in the dome of Baltimore's City Hall. Established on Holliday and Centre Streets in Baltimore, Maryland, the McShane Bell Foundry is now relocated to St. Louis, Missouri.

Eastpoint Mall

Eastpoint mall was first opened in 1956. The mall is located in Dundalk, MD, and currently has around 140 stores. Value City Furniture, Burlington Coat Factory, JCPenney, and Gabe's are its four anchor stores. Other stores located in the Eastpoint Mall include AT&T, Bath & Body Works, Baltimore's Finest Design, Foot Locker, JBK Boutique, LeatherMan, and Mr. Wireless. Some of the stores that are coming soon to the mall are Party City, Rainbow, Shoe City, The Children's Place, and Toy Town. With so many stores to shop at, visitors can find everything they need at Eastpoint Mall. However, they must check out the mall's fountain and Bennett's Curse Haunted House.

Dandelion Fountain

The fountain at Eastpoint mall is shaped like a dandelion. It was inspired and based on the El Alamein Memorial Fountain located in Syndey, Australia. The original fountain was commissioned as a war memorial for soldiers who died at El Alamein, Egypt, during World War II. Retirees from World War II, in the Dundalk area, can come to the fountain in Eastpoint Mall to reminisce.

Bennett's Curse Haunted House

The Bennett's Curse Haunted House is Maryland's number one Halloween attraction. It is a locally-owned small family business that was opened in 2001. Bennett's Curse has four main attractions: Underworld Haunted House, Inferno 3D, Ravenbrook Asylum, and Legends of Halloween. Each season has different themed haunted events, and the admission price includes all four attractions.
