The Nuclear Ship Savannah is a non-functional one-of-a-kind nuclear cargo or passenger ship. Considered a maritime museum, the ship is currently located on Newgate Ave., just outside of Point Breeze. It is under a long-term layberth contract with the Canton Marine Terminals. Operated by the U.S. Maritime Administration (MARAD), access to the Savannah through guided tours for groups and individuals can be granted by their MARAD's Savannah Technical Support (STS) group. Enthusiasts also have the option of taking a virtual tour on the Historic Naval Ships Association website.
The Liberty Ship John W. Brown is one of the only two remaining, fully operational Liberty ships of World War II. Open on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., it is a historical museum ship also situated on Newgate Ave.
The non-profit organization Project Liberty Ship restored it in order to educate people on the importance of the wartime American merchant marine, Naval Armed Guard and shipbuilders. Preserving and operating the ship as a living memorial, the Project Liberty Ship offers guided tours, steam schools, and WWII merchant seaman experiences on the S.S. John W. Brown.
