Glenmont is an unincorporated community in the county of Montgomery, Maryland. The census-designated place (CDP) was created in 2010 by the United States Census Bureau after it separated the CDP of Wheaton-Glenmont. As of 2014, the population for the community was 15,412 people.
The area of Glenmont dates back to the 1800s. However, in the 1800s and early 1900s, it only consisted of a few houses and small farms along Georgia Ave. The Hardy family, one of the original families in the area, had a farm between Randolph Rd. and Parker Ave. It was Mary Hardy who gave the area's post office the name Glenmont in 1898. When the post office closed in 1901, the name for the area stuck around.
In 1926, the first school in Glenmont opened. Under the guidance of principal Miss Ruth Burrough, the school had a population of 136 students in its first year. Serving students who lived in Glenmont, Layhill, Aspen Hill and Wheaton, the Glenmont School had four classrooms, two special department rooms and an auditorium. In 1928, an American flag pole was added to the school through the donation of the Cissel-Saxon Post of the American Legion. A memorial flag pole, dedicated in the memory of Paul Latene Hull, who was killed in action during World War I in France, was also donated by Major E. Brooke Lee. In 1946, additional extensions to the school were built based on V.T.H. Bien's design.
Besides Glenmont School, the community remained underdeveloped until the end of World War II. After the war, the construction of subdivisions began the suburbanization of Glenmont. In 1947, a 189-foot tall multi-columned elevated water tank called the Glenmont Water Tower was built by the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission. In 1949, commercial and residential developments, like Glenmont Village and Glenmont Forest, started transforming the area into the Glenmont of today.
The community of Glenmont is now one of the best places to live in the state of Maryland. Offering a dense suburban area feel, 65% of the residents in the area own their own homes. These residential properties have a median value of $422,500. The median rent price is $1,736. Households in Glenmont make, on average, an income of $95,482.
Like the Glenmont Fire Station 18 and Montgomery County Police Department, 4th District Sation, the Glenmont Shopping Center is located at the intersection of Randolph Rd. and Georgia Ave. Catering to residents in the area, it features Irene's Pupusas, Staples, Divine Medicine, Don Pollo of Glenmont, Famas Market, Glenmont Beauty Supply, Yett Gol, a USCIS Application Support Center ASC, and many other dining and shopping options.
The Glenfield Local Park was purchased by the Montgomery Department of Parks in 1986. Situated on Layhill Rd., just north of the Glenmont Shopping Center, the 11.3-acre park is open daily from dawn to dusk. It provides visitors with a bocce ball court, exercise station, playground, serval ballfields, two tennis courts and a picnic shelter.
