History of Security Square Mall

Originally opened in the 1970s, the mall has evolved over the years with the changes in the retail environment. Currently, there are over 100 stores and restaurants. Both Burlington and Macy's are anchor stores. Previous anchor stores were Sears, Hecht's, and JCPenny.

Renovations of Security Square

In 2001, JCPenny closed its doors. Two years later the large space was converted to Seoul Plaza, which was renamed in 2018 to the Grand Village Plaza. This area of the mall features Korean shops and several restaurants.

The building was built by the Edward J. DeBartolo corporation but was sold to JMB Urban Realty in 1983.  Since then, privately held realty company, Capital Investment Associates, has purchased the mall and hired Hicks & Rotner Retail to revitalize the mall and sign new retailers.

Current Stores

With over 100 current shops and food stores, there is something for everyone at the mall. Quick food options in the food court include A&D Buffalo, American Kitchen Cafe, Auntie Anne's, Cajun Cafe, Checkers, Ming Tree, Pizzatella, Sarku Japan, and Subway, among others. There are also several sit-down food options and several specialty food vendors including Tokyo Seafood Buffet Hibachi Grill and Sushi, The Great Cookie, and bubble Tea & Slushy World.

Of course, going to the mall is more than just eating. Outside of the current anchor stores, there are shops such as The Avenue, selling women's clothes, shoes, and accessories. There is Shoe City offering the latest in sneaker trends. There's MW Tux selling the latest styles in men's suits. If you're looking for jewelry there are quite a few options including Piercing Pagoda, Zales, Kay Jewelers, and Claire's.

The mall is also home to a community of "Mall Walkers," a group of people who use the mall square footage to walk and get into shape. The indoor 'track' offers warmth in the winter and cooling in the summer. There is also an AMC Movie Theater offering the latest in blockbusters to watch.

Transportation

Security Square is located just off the Baltimore Beltway, exit #17, and is driven by if you are on I-70. While you cannot directly access the mall from I-70, there is an exit to Security Boulevard from the end, taking you about 2 miles further down from the mall.

The parking lot of the mall is also used by the Maryland Transit Administration buses including the No. 31, CityLink Blue, and Route 20 bus.
