Severna Park lies in the Baltimore-Washington Metropolitan Area with a population of 38,188. Located about 8 miles north of Annapolis, 17 miles south of Baltimore and 39 miles east of Washington, the community is a census-designated place (CDP) in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. The current name of Severna Park is said to have originated from a contest held by Oscar Hatton in 1906 when the community was being established.
The winning prize of the contest was a portion of land, but the prize was changed to $500 when the winner turned out to be an African-American woman. However, this naming contest is considered a local myth after historian Nelson Molter conducted extensive research and found no supporting evidence.
Located on Evon Ct., Severna Park, Robinson House is a historic home that was added to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) in 2009. The house was built in 1740 out of red sandstone, or ironstone. It is a 1 and 1/2-story stone dwelling that features a gambrel roof. The Robinson House has an architectural significance as being a rare example of a house constructed in the Chesapeake Tidewater region around the 1750s.
In 1914, Roland M. Teel founded the Severn School. The school acted as a preparatory school for the United States Naval Academy. In 2013, it merged with the nearby Chesapeake Academy and currently enrolls boys and girls from pre-kindergarten to 12th grade. Some of the facilities located in this school are Teel Academic Center, Creeden Hall, Stine Outdoor Education Center, Edward St. John Athletic Center, Flinchum Gymnasium, Troy Media Center and Sivvy Theatre.
Nearby is the town of Pasadena, MD, a local community with many outdoor parks to explore.
The Kinder Farm Park is located in the northern portion of Severna Park. It is home to farming artifacts from the 1930s like the tobacco press and tools for harvesting tobacco, a Harvest Hall meeting room that houses between 100 to 200 people, and the Kinder Family farmhouse that was built in 1925 and later restored. The park also includes amenities such as picnic tables, grills, rentable outdoor pavilions, a large playground, a 2.8-mile paved trail, and several nature trails. Another feature of Kinder Farm Park is its agricultural history program and working farm. The program and farm showcase the agricultural practices of Anne Arundel County from the past to the present.
