About New Carrollton

New Carrollton is a city in the central area of Prince George's County, Maryland. It was built on the former estate of Edward L. Mahoney, a horse racing figure. After Mahoney died in 1957, the land was purchased by developer Albert W. Turner. Turner planned to create a suburb out of the City of Carrollton charter he received on April 11, 1953, from the Maryland General Assembly. Carrollton was named after Charles Carroll of Carrollton, an early Maryland settler and signer of the Declaration of Independence. However, on May 2, 1966, the community was renamed New Carrollton because there were already two communities in Maryland with the name Carrollton.

Education

New Carrollton is served by the Prince George's County Public Schools System. Many of the schools designated for the residential properties in the community are located within the area. These schools include:

• Carrollton Elementary School
  • Carrollton Elementary has a total enrollment of 627 students from grades pre-Kindergarten to fifth. The school has an overall Niche grade of a C and a 5 out of 10 GreatSchools rating.
• Robert Frost Elementary School
  • The school serves grades Kindergarten to fifth and has a student population of 288. Robert Frost Elementary has an overall Niche grade of a C plus and a GreatSchools rating of a 5 out of 10.
• Lamont Elementary School
  • Lamont Elementary has 522 students in pre-Kindergarten through fifth grade. It has a GreatSchools rating of a 3 out of 10 and an overall Niche grade of a C minus.
• Charles Carroll Middle School

• Margaret Brent Regional Center School
  • Margaret Brent Regional School only has an enrollment of 73 students. It serves grades Kindergarten through eighth and has an overall Niche grade of a C.

Situated near the bottom of the New Carrollton community is The Shopppes At New Carrollton and the Carrollton Shopping Center. The shopping plazas are right off of Annapolis Rd. Vera Cope Weinbach Park Building

Vera Cope Weinbach Park Building is one of the many neighborhood parks in New Carrollton. Located at the center of the community, it is owned and operated by the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission. The park provides recreation amenities like an open space, paved trail, tennis court, playground and an outdoor practice wall. General park amenities include restrooms and picnic tables for social gatherings and relaxing.
