Federal Hill is a neighborhood located in Baltimore, Maryland. The hill was once known as Signal Hall because it was home to a maritime observatory that observed the ships sailing up the Patapsco River and signaled their arrival to the business people downtown. In 1789, the hill was given the name "Federal Hill" after the civic celebration and parade of the ratification of the new constitution of the United States of America.
Federal Hill became the location of a paint pigment mining operation. In the 1900s, it was a working-class neighborhood. However, by the late 1970s, it had seen a decline and become another struggling Baltimore inner city neighborhood. In the early 1980s, the Bethlehem Steel shipyards were one of the last to shut down.
In 1975, the urban homesteading program in Otterbein prompted individuals and businesses to invest and rehabilitate Federal Hill. In the mid-1990s, the second wave of investment and rising property values hit Federal Hill. This neighborhood investment included single-family homes and large development projects. This lead to an increase in the popularity of living in Federal Hill. New restaurants and shops began opening in the heart of the city.
In 2006, most of the 0.6% growth in population recorded for the city of Baltimore was evident in Federal Hill. Many of the structures in this area are included in the Federal Hill Historic District or the Federal Hill South Historic District. The former was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970. The latter was listed in 2003.
Federal Hill Park is a signature Baltimore landmark. Located just south of downtown Baltimore and a short walk from the Inner Harbor, the park has one of the best views in the city. It offers visitors a panoramic view of Baltimore and the most iconic views of the Inner Harbor. Coined as the "great red bank of clay" by the English colonial settler Capt. John Smith in 1608, Federal Hill Park is now a big green hillside with picnickers, star-gazers, monuments commemorating the Battle of Baltimore in 1814, and cannons that once were at Fort Federal Hill during the Civil War.
Other amenities included at Federal Hill Park are park bench seating and picnicking, playground, basketball court, Flag Staff Plaza, restaurants and pubs. There are also miniature "historic icons" like "The Federalist" ship, Fort Federal Hill, the Signal Hill Tower, and a Baltimore and Ohio Railroad engine featured at the park to represent the unique history of Baltimore and Maryland. In addition, underneath Federal Hill Park is also full of history. The hill of Federal Hill Park has several tunnels and passageways that date back to the 1800s.

As one of the country's oldest public markets, Cross Street Market is a hub for residents and visitors of Federal Hill and the city of Baltimore. Located in the hearted of Federal Hill on S Charles St., the market was constructed in 1846 and re-opened in 2019 after a full renovation. It now houses over 20 independently-owned and operating vendors. Some of these vendors are Annoula's Greek Kitchen, Atlas Fish Market, Bullhead Pit Beef, Cans Filling Station, Gangster Vegan, Ono Poke, Rooster + Hen, and many more. The market is open on Sunday through Wednesday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. On Thursday, it's open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. On Fridays and Saturdays, it is open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.
