Incorporated in 1910, Capitol Heights is a community in Prince George's County, Maryland. With the zip code of 20743, the town is located on the border of the Northeast and Southeast quadrants of Washington. It is bounded by Southern Ave. NE/SE to the north, Yost Place and Eastern Ave. NE to the east, the Watts Branch Stream, Capital Heights Blvd. and Brooke Rd. to the south, and Marlboro Pike to the west.
The area of Capitol Heights was first established in 1904 when Baltimore resident Otway B. Zantzinger bought 400 hilly acres just outside the eastern corner of Washington, D.C. He divided it into 4,000 lots and began selling them for $20 to $150 each. He advertised the area with nothing down and a dollar a month, no landlords or interest, a picturesque view of Washington, D.C., drinking water from crystal-clear springs, a proposed electric railway and more.
By 1910, around 200 householders have moved into the town. It was around this time that they decided to incorporate the area as Capitol Heights. Within the next 50 years, a fire department, public works departments and housing facilities were established. In 1980, the community for its own station on the Washington Metro Blue Line.
As of the 2010 census, there was a total population of 4,337 people living in the community. The population density was 5,421.3 people per square mile. The average age of a person living in the area was 34.9. Capitol Heights had a racial makeup of the following:

All the schools zoned for the town of Capitol Heights are part of the Prince George's County Public Schools System. This includes Capitol Heights Elementary School, which is located on Suffolk Ave., within the neighborhood. Serving grades pre-Kindergarten to fifth, the magnet elementary school has a student population of 307 and a student-to-teacher ratio of 11 to 1.
Based on state test scores, 57% of the students are proficient in reading and 42% are proficient in math. Capitol Heights Elementary School has a GreatSchools rating of 7 out of 10 and an overall Niche grade of a B minus.
Capitol Heights South Park is a neighborhood park on Larchmont Ave. Owned by the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, the park has an overall size of between a basketball court and a football field. Recreational amenities featured here are an open activity field, outdoor basketball court and a synthetic playground.
