History of Camp Springs

Camp Springs is an unincorporated area in the county of Prince George's, Maryland. It is surrounded by the communities of Temple Hills, Apple Grove, Friendly, Clinton, Joint Base Andrews, Morningside, Suitland, Silver Hill, Gordons Corner and Marlow Heights. The census-designated place (CDP) includes the unincorporated area of Andrews Manor and has a population of 19,096 as of the 2010 census.

The Camp Springs community was established in the mid-1800s at present-day Branch Ave. and Allentown Rd. By 1860, it consisted of a blacksmith shop, Methodist church, school, several stores and residences. Based on early records, the settlement was named Allentown after the Allen family, who owned a large portion of the land in the area. It is said, the community got its Camp Springs name because soldiers who were on their way to Fort Meade would camp in the area due to its many springs.

During the late 1800s and early 1900s, there was no significant growth to the Camp Springs area. However, when the Camp Springs Army Air Field, now Joint Base Andrews, was developed in the 1940s on the tract of land adjacent to the community and a shortage of housing was evident after World War II, Camp Spring became an ideal area for residential development. Developments to Camp Springs include the following:

  • The subdivision of the Middleton farm (Gleen Hills, Middleton Valley and Middleton Farm) north of Camp Springs in the 1940s
  • The platting of Trueman Heights on over 100 acres of land in the northwest quadrant of the Camp Springs crossroads by Guy Trueman in the mid-1940s
  • Infill constructions of  residential properties within subdivisions in the 1950s
  • The 400 houses in Westchester Estates
  • Commercial buildings along the Allentown Rd.

Nonetheless, these developments were done slowly through the decade because of the lack of water and sewer lines. It wasn't until the 1960s and 1970s when the lines were completed. This led to the largest boom of construction in the area. Today, Camp Springs is part of the Prince George's County Public Schools System. Schools serving the area include Allenwood Elementary School, Avalon Elementary School, William Beanes Elementary School, Hillcrest Heights Elementary School, Princeton Elementary School, Thurgood Marshall Middle School, Isaac J. Gourdine Middle School, Drew-Freeman Middle School, Crossland High School, and Dr. Henry A. Wise High School.
