22 Year Old Md Naval Academy Midshipman Drowns While On Leave

Victim Identified As Midshipman John Johnson Of Chapel Hill

While on leave from the Annapolis, Maryland U.S Naval Academy, a 22-year-old midshipman perished in a drowning accident.

On the day of the accident, 22-year-old John Johnson was on vacation with family members. While enjoying the resort's outdoor pool, Johnson went under the water but did not resurface. Some of his nearby friends noticed the victim did not resurface and they jumped in to help. He was pulled out of the water and CPR was administered yet Johnson did not respond. Emergency responders transported Johnson to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Johnson's colleagues expressed deep sadness about the midshipman's passing. 29th Company Officer Lt. Eric Nordquist, U.S. Naval Academy, said of Johnson: "If I were to describe John in one word, it would be ‘passion,’ He epitomized and excelled in every area, and earned the respect of everyone who crossed his path. He will be sorely missed."

While this incident occurred while Johnson was on leave, attention was drawn to the MD Naval Academy earlier in 2020 by the deaths of other midshipmen, though these were not drowning-related:

  • David Forney, 22, was found unresponsive on the Academy's campus
  • Duke Carrillo, 21, was laid to rest at the Naval Academy in February 2020
  • Mathew Sears, 22, died from leukemia complications

Who Is Responsible For Drowning Accidents?

Swimming pools at hotels and resorts are often one of the guests' favorite amenities. Many look forward to enjoying the sun on pool decks and having fun with friends in the water.

Unfortunately, what is less likely to be on swimmer's minds while enjoying themselves are the risks associated with pools. In many cases, it can be considered the hotel's responsibility to ensure the safety and well-being of guests while on the premises.

Towards this goal, many pools will often employ full-time, professionally-trained lifeguards. As a result, if an accident does happen, it is less likely to end in tragedy. Yet, when business owners fail to protect the customers who visit their property, they may be held liable for damages as a result of this recklessness.

Through a premises liability and negligence lawsuit, victims of drowning accidents have the possibility of receiving compensation for their losses. This compensation can take into account medical expenses, funeral costs, loss of income, pain & suffering, loss of consortium and more.

Putting together a strong case for compensation after a drowning accident is not a simple process. Victims rarely have the experience to represent themselves, which is why it is highly recommended to seek the representation of a swimming pool accident lawyer. By consulting with an attorney, victims can learn more about their legal options and the potential value of their case.
