Welcome to Elkridge, MD, an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Howard County, Maryland. Elkridge holds the distinction of being the oldest settlement in Howard County, with roots stretching back to the early 18th century. Originally part of Anne Arundel County, Elkridge's strategic location on the Patapsco River was a pivotal factor in its early growth. In the 1730s, the settlement was planned to be formalized as "Jansen Town," although it was not until later that the community began to flourish.
The history of Elkridge is intertwined with the nation's development. From serving as a vital tobacco trading post with its own seaport dock, Elkridge Landing, to the establishment of the Elkridge Furnace in 1755, the community played a significant role in early American industry. The area was even graced by the presence of Lafayette's troops during the Revolutionary War.
Elkridge boasts several historic churches, such as Melville Church and Saint Augustine Church, the latter opening its parochial school in 1870. The community's industrial heritage includes pig-iron forging, basket weaving, and milling. A notable architectural feat, the Thomas Viaduct, built in 1833, stands as the world's oldest multiple-arched curved stone railroad bridge.
During the Civil War, Union troops protected the Thomas Viaduct and the route to Baltimore, camping on Lawyers Hill. This area, a community of summer estates belonging to notable Baltimore residents, became a historical hub. The Lawyers Hill Historic District, recognized in 1993, preserves many of these significant estates.
Elkridge did not stay locked in the past. The Washington Turnpike Road Company's creation of what is now U.S. Route 1 and the advent of automobiles transformed the area into a key commercial corridor. Elkridge also witnessed the growth of bus services and the establishment of the first mobile home park in the region in 1939.
Situated at 39°12′7″N 76°45′1″W, Elkridge borders several communities and counties, highlighting its connectedness within the region. Covering 8.4 square miles, Elkridge today is a blend of historical reverence and modern living, making it a unique and vibrant place to live, work, and explore.
