Flash From the Past

In the 1600s, the community of Towson was just land inhabited by Susquehannock people. In 1752, William and Thomas Towson settled in the area of Sater's Hill. This is the first settlement of Towson. They began farming the area; not long after, Ezekial, William's son, opened the Towson Hotel. Located at present-day Shealy Ave. and York Rd., this hotel was used to serve farmers trading at the port of Baltimore. The village that the Towson's created was called "Towsontown."

As for West Towson, the property there originated from two land grants. In 1719, 400 acres of land was patented by Richard Gott. He called this land grant "Gott's Hope." The remaining portion of West Towson is from the "Gunner's Range" land grant in 1706.

On February 13, 1854, Towson became the county seat of Baltimore County and has remained so til now. Currently, the unincorporated community of Towson is a census-designated place in Baltimore County, Maryland. It is the second-most populated unincorporated county seat in the U.S.
