History of Somerset

Somerset is an incorporated town in the county of Montgomery, Maryland. It is surrounded by the neighborhoods of Kenwood, Westwood, Westgate, Friendship Village, Chevy Chase and Chevy Chase Terrance. Located at geographical coordinates of 38.967110 degrees north latitude and 77.094824 degrees west longitude, it is within a short distance of the Maryland and Washington, D.C., borderline.

The history of the town dates back to 1890 when five government scientists decided to purchase 50 acres parcel of tobacco farmland of the Friendship Tract – a 3,000 acres gift to several early Maryland colonists in 1713 – from the government to set up a residential community. The first five streets that were developed in the area were Dorset, Warwick, Cumberland, Essex, and Surrey. These streets still serve the residents of Somerset to this day. In 1893, Dr. Charles A. Crampton occupied the first home in the town. By 1905, 35 residences had settled in the area.

However, the town of Somerset suffered from a makeshift sewage system, inadequate water drainage, and a lack of local fire protection and schools. This led the residents to petition the State of Maryland for incorporation of the area into a township so taxes could be collected to provide these basic services. In 1906. the charter was issued and the community of Somerset Heights and the Town of Somerset was formed. Today, the town is part of the Montgomery County Public Schools District. Residents living in Somerset are zoned to Somerset Elementary School, Westland Middle School and Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School.
