Brief History of Carmody Hills

Carmody Hills is an unincorporated community in the county of Prince George's, Maryland. It is part of the census-designated place (CDP) of Peppermill Village, alongside the community of Pepper Mill Village. The community sits south of Seat Pleasant Dr. and east of Seat Pleasant. The main roads operating in the area are Martin Luther King Jr. Hwy. (Maryland Route 704), Hill Rd., Seat Pleasant Dr., Addison Rd., and Central Ave. (Maryland Route 214).

Platted in the 1930s, Carmody Hills is one of the subdivisions that were constructed in the early to mid-1900s around the Town of Seat Pleasant. Between the 1930s and 1970s, houses were constructed and roads were developed in the area. By 1942, the Carmody Hills was well established, with around 130 houses. From 1957 through 1965, it expanded several blocks to the east and one block to the south. The Carmody Hills School was then established. In the 1970s, the areas that were once inaccessible also started developing as street paving and drainage were added to the community.

Carmody Hills Elementary School

Carmody Hills Elementary School is one of the schools in Prince George's County Public Schools District. Located on Jadeleaf Ave., it has a population of 442 students made up of 48% females and 52% males. The school has a minority student enrollment of 98%. It also consists of 100% economically disadvantaged students. There are 28 full-time teachers and one full-time school counselor. It has a student-to-teacher ratio of 16 to 1. Based on state test scores, 13% of its students are proficient in reading and 5% in math. Niche gives it an overall grade of a C minus. GreatSchools gives it a rating of a 2 out of 10.

J. Franklyn Bourne Memorial Pool

The J. Franklyn Bourne Memorial Pool is a neighborhood pool of the Prince George's County Department of Parks and Recreation on Calmos St. Admission is free for children 2 and under. Depending on whether you are a resident of the community or not, it is $3 or $5 for children 3 to 17, $4 or $6 for adults 18 to 59, and $3 or $5 for seniors 60 and up. The pool features the following amenities:

  • Water Slide

Adult swims, the American Red Cross Swim Lessons, and exercise classes are also available. The J. Franklyn Bourne Memorial Pool is open from 12 to 5 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays, from 12 to 8 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 12 to 6 p.m. on Fridays, and from 12 to 4 p.m. on Sundays.

Peppermill Community Center

The Peppermill Community Center is situated on Hill Rd. in Carmody Hill. Newly renovated, it provides a permitted athletic field with a loop trail, indoor gymnasium, fitness room, multipurpose rooms, full kitchen and pantry, playground, outdoor basketball court, outdoor tennis court, and outdoor patios. It also offers programs such as fitness classes, a senior program and an Xtreme Teens program. Operation hours for the center are Mondays through Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Fridays from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Sundays from noon to 4 p.m.
