Pimlico Race Course

As one of the two Maryland Jockey Club tracks – the other one being Laural Race Track in Laural Park – Pimlico Race Course was opened in 1870. Currently owned by the Stronach Group, it is a thoroughbred horse racetrack that became famous for hosting the Preakness Stakes – a Grade 1 thoroughbred horse race held every third Saturday in May. Named after the Olde Ben Pimlico's Tavern in London, the course has a capacity of over 12,000 people and stables to hold around 1,000 horses. The racetrack, a one-mile dirt oval, is nicknamed "Old Hilltop" for a small rise in the infield. This small rise became the favorite gathering place for race enthusiasts and thoroughbred trainers.

Pimlico Race Course was the original home for the Virgin Mobile Festival from 2006 to 2008. During those years, it hosted headliners such as Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Who, The Police, the Beastie Boys, the Foo Fighter, Kanye West, Stone Temple Pilots and Nine Inch Nails.
