The Community of Edgewood

Edgewood is an unincorporated community in southwestern Harford County, Maryland. The census-designated place (CDP) has a total area of 17.9 square miles – 17.8 square miles of which are land and 0.2 square miles are water. It is bordered by the following:

  • Joppatowne, Baltimore County, to the west
  • Bel Air South to the north
  • The Bush River, an arm of Chesapeake Bay, to the east
  • The Edgewood Arsenal portion of Aberdeen Proving Ground to the south
  • The Tidal Gunpowder River, an arm of the Chesapeake Bay, to the southwest

Neighborhoods situated within the CDP are Willoughby Court, Willoughby Woods, Ashby Place, Woodbridge Center and West Shore. Notable people who have resided in Edgewood include the former offensive guard for the Miami Dolphins in the NFL Brandon Albert, former Maryland state legislator B. Daniel Riley, actor Johnathan Schaech, former goalie for Chicago Fire of Major League Soccer Zach Thornton, former composer, musician and film director Frank Zappa.

Demographics

As of the 2000 census, there is a total population of 23,378 people living in Edgewood. The CDP has a population density of 1,303.9 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the area is:

  • 68.10% White
  • 25.66% African American
  • 3.40% Hispanic or Latino of Any Race
  • 2.70% From Two or More Races
  • 1.64% Asian
  • 1.40% From Other Races
  • 0.40% Native American
  • 0.09% Pacific Islander

Edgewood had 8,834 housing units. The CDP includes 8,299 households and 6,224 families, with an average size being 2.81 and 3.21, respectively. These households consist of:

  • 50.2% were married couples
  • 43.9% had children under 18
  • 25.0% were non-families
  • 19.6% were made up of individuals
  • 19.3% had female householders
  • 4.3% had someone living alone under 65

The average income for a household in the area was $47,150. Males made around $36,076, and females made $27,214. About 10.3% of the population lived below the poverty line. In 2010, the census recorded a population of 25,562 people.

Education

The Harford County Public Schools District serves the Edgewood CDP. The community is home to Edgewood Elementary School, Deerfield Elementary School, Edgewood Middle School and Edgewood High School.

Edgewood Elementary School has a population of 381 students from pre-Kindergarten through fifth grade. Its GreatSchools rating is a 6 out of 10. Deerfield Elementary School has a population of 765 students and an overall Niche grade of a B minus. Its GreatSchools rating is a 5 out of 10. Edgewood Middle School also has an overall Niche grade of a B minus and a 5 out of 10 GreatSchools rating. It has an enrollment of 1,118 students from sixth through eighth grade.

Edgewood High School

Edgewood High School was established in 1954 as a four-year public high school in Edgewood. In 2010, the building was demolished and rebuilt as a 268,000 square feet state-of-the-art high school. Featuring modern facilities and amenities, it has a total enrollment of 1,387 students. There is a student-to-teacher ratio of 17 to 1. Edgewood High School offers fine arts programs that included a nationally well-known music program and the arts program. The school also offers two magnet programs: The International Baccalaureate degree program and the Academy of Finance. Based on state test scores. 49% of the students are at least proficient in reading and 37% are in math. Edgewood High has a GreatSchools rating of a 3 out of 10 and an overall Niche grade of a B plus.

Bosely Conservancy

The Bosely Conservancy is one of the two areas of the Otter Point Creek Component, the other being the Anita C. Leight Estuary Center. The hiking area is owned by the Harford County Chapter of the Izaak Walton League. Opened from dawn to dusk, the area is 350 acres of wet wooded forest. Trails offered at the Bosely Conservancy are the Yellow Trail, White Trail, Red Trail, Bue Trail and Orange Trail. All trails are marked by color blazes on the trees. Unfortunately, it is prone to flooding. During the summer, it can also become overgrown.
