All About Aero Acres

Aero Acres is a planned residential community in Middle River, Maryland. It came about in 1941 after the passing of the U.S. Housing Act of 1941. The Glenn L. Martin Aircraft Company near Baltimore constructed the community for their aircraft factory employees. It was developed by the John B. Pierce Foundation and designed by the architecture firm Skidmore Owings and Merrill (SOM). The street plan was shaped like an airplane, with airplane parts as the street names. There were approximately 600 homes developed in 1941 – 300 more than the original plan.

Created out of an innovative prefabricated system known as "Cemesto" – pressed sugar cane fiber in between asbestos layers – the one-story Cape Cod-style homes keep with government wartime housing standards and marketing by the Pierce Foundation as affordable defense housing. The community also included a shopping center with restaurants, shops, a supermarket, a movie theater and a recreation hall.

Today, Aero Acres is considered one of the country's oldest working-class suburbs. It acts as a fine example of one of the only World War II defense housing projects left in the U.S. Although renovations have been done to the community, the character of Aero Acres still remains.
