Back in the mid-1800s, Waverly was a tiny village known as Huntingdon. It lied along York Rd. and was the summer designation for many wealthy residents. As summer cottages began building in the late-1800s, a town hall, post office and firehouse were soon established. As the village became more developed, changes to its name had to be made to avoid any confusion. The village decided to adopt the name Waverly, based on the name of the famous English author Sir Walter Scott's first novel. The neighborhood of Waverly is part of the Waverly Main Street Historic District.

Most of the homes built in Waverly were rowhouses and wood Victorian single-family houses. The average value of a home in the area is $143,644. The median rent price is $1,152. Only 47% of the residents own their homes. 53% rent them. Waverly currently has a population of 4,413 people.
