Seton Hill is a pocket neighborhood in Baltimore, Maryland. It is surrounded by the communities of Mcculloh Homes. Heritage Crossing, Lexington Terrace, Westside, Downtown and Bromo Arts District. In 1968, Seton Hill was designated as a Historic and Architectural Preservation. Later on July 30, 1975, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The community was once Baltimore's second French Quarter and centered around the former St. Mary's Seminary and College. It was the first Catholic seminary in the U.S. In 1966, the seminary celebrated its 175th anniversary. Four years later, the St. Mary's Seminary and College was converted into Saint Mary's Park, the largest open green space in downtown Baltimore.
In 1808, the last remaining building of the St. Mary's academic structure, the Chapel of Our Lady of the Presentation, was dedicated. Designed by architect J. Mazimilen M. Godefroy, the red brick chapel is one of the oldest remaining examples of Gothic Revival architecture in the U.S. On November 11, 1971, it was designated as a U.S. National Historic Landmark and listed on the NRHP.
Mother Seton House is a 2 and 1/2-story red brick historic house in Seton Hill. Located on the grounds of Saint Mary Park, next to the St. Mary's Seminary Chapel, it was built in 1808. The house was home to Elizabeth Ann Seton. After her death in 1821, she became the first American-born woman to be beatified and canonized by the Roman Catholic Church. In the 1960s, the house was restored and operated as the St. Mary's Spiritual Center & Historic Site. Visiting hours are Mondays through Fridays from noon to 3:30 p.m. On Saturdays and Sundays, it is open from 1 p.m. to 3 o.m. Mother Seton House was listed on the NRHP in 1972.
Arena Players Incorporated is the oldest operating African American community theater in the U.S. It was established in 1953 by Jimmie Bell, Doris Dilver, Bernard Byrd, Aurthur Thurogood, Joe Wilson. Irvin Turner, Julius Wilson and Sam Wilson. In 1965, the theater started its annual banquet, presenting awards to people responsible for excellence in preserving the performing arts.
