The Split Sections of Mt. Washington

Mount Washington is an area in the northwest region of Baltimore, Maryland. It was established in 1854 when George Gelback and Elias Heiner purchased 314 acres of land near the mill village of Washingtonville. They began building summer homes in the area, with Gelbach envisioning Mount Washington becoming a suburb of Baltimore in the future. In 1855, Thomas Dixon bought 20 acres of the land from Gelbach. This northern section was developed in the 1860s and later became Dixon's Hill.

On the other hand, the southern section was only further developed after the Civil War by developer John Graham. Before its annexation in 1914, the area was part of Baltimore County. Mount Washington is now divided into the two sections of Dixon's Hill to the north and South Road and Sulgrave to the southeast. Considered by some to be the first suburb of Baltimore, on May 4, 1990, the area of Mount Washington was listed to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP).

Transportation

Besides using personal vehicles, Mount Washington offers its residents and visitors several options of public transportations to utilize. All operated by the Maryland Transit Administration (MTA), these public transportations include the Central Light Rail line, Route 27 bus line, Route 58 bus line and Route 60 bus line. These lines operate to areas like downtown Baltimore, Hunt Valley, BWI Airport, Hampden, Cherry Hill, Fallstaff and Stevenson University.
