Mount Washington is an area in the northwest region of Baltimore, Maryland. It was established in 1854 when George Gelback and Elias Heiner purchased 314 acres of land near the mill village of Washingtonville. They began building summer homes in the area, with Gelbach envisioning Mount Washington becoming a suburb of Baltimore in the future. In 1855, Thomas Dixon bought 20 acres of the land from Gelbach. This northern section was developed in the 1860s and later became Dixon's Hill.
On the other hand, the southern section was only further developed after the Civil War by developer John Graham. Before its annexation in 1914, the area was part of Baltimore County. Mount Washington is now divided into the two sections of Dixon's Hill to the north and South Road and Sulgrave to the southeast. Considered by some to be the first suburb of Baltimore, on May 4, 1990, the area of Mount Washington was listed to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP).
Besides using personal vehicles, Mount Washington offers its residents and visitors several options of public transportations to utilize. All operated by the Maryland Transit Administration (MTA), these public transportations include the Central Light Rail line, Route 27 bus line, Route 58 bus line and Route 60 bus line. These lines operate to areas like downtown Baltimore, Hunt Valley, BWI Airport, Hampden, Cherry Hill, Fallstaff and Stevenson University.
Located on Kelly Ave., just to the west side of Jones Fall Expy., is Mount Washington Village. As a commercial area, this historic village caters to locals and visitors of Mount Washington. The historic Mount Washington Village offers its guests with fine dining, shopping and art viewing. Some of the restaurants, boutiques, galleries and other stores featured here are:
The village also includes the Central Light Rail and Mt. Washington Center. Mt. Washington Center is a doctor's center associated with psychotherapy, psychoanalysis, psychiatry, counseling, therapy and other related fields.
Situated next to Mt. Washington Village, on the east side of the Jones Falls Expy., is the Mt. Washington Mill Business Center. The business center was once part of Mt. Washington Village until the development of the Jones Falls Expy., which split them into two separate entities. The center currently houses Whole Foods, Starbucks, Loyal Companion pet supply store, Wine Works, Amazing Glaze pottery store and other businesses.
Also housed in the Mt. Washington Mill Business Center, the Mt. Washington Mill- Dye House is an event space hosting weddings, corporate and social events. The event space was a textile and cotton mill until it was bought out by the Maryland Bolt and Nut Company in 1923. It was then used for the production of metal fasteners like screws, bolts and rivets until 1989. Mt. Washington Mill- Dye House is a historic building that was reconstructed to fit the modernity of today, yet still holds its historical values. It features multi-pane windows, exposed bricks, rustic wood beams, distressed concrete floors, and 5,000 square feet of interior and exterior space.
